Shelby + Devin’s Colorful Backyard Finger Lakes Wedding
Shelby and Devin’s engagement session was one for the books, so when their Finger Lakes wedding rolled around, I know it was going to be truly unique to them as a couple. The whole event took place on Shelby’s grandfather’s property, the site of many family reunions over the years. I love how a backyard wedding can just put everyone at ease and make each moment feel that much more special.
It took me about 2 hours to drive from Syracuse to the Finger Lakes, and I made sure to leave extra early (you never know what could happen!). I ended up using that extra time to explore the space - getting a lay for the land and figuring out the best views and backgrounds. After that, I had a little time left to start gathering details to photograph. Their colorful flowers and bee themed wedding details were so dreamy! The bright colors were a play on Devin’s last name (“Bright”), and I had so much fun creating different layouts using everything!
Shelby and Devin got ready just a few rooms apart, then Devin left so he could be ready and waiting for their first look at the church down the street. Once Shelby was dressed, she, her best friend/Officiant Amanda, and I headed over. Devin was absolutely blown away when he saw Shelby for the first time. I love how well their outfits coordinated, with a nod to Shelby’s Puerto Rican heritage and flowers in both of their hair. They shared private vows in the shade of the trees, and even I was tearing up as I watched from a distance.
The ceremony space was decked out with large colorful floral arrangements, which were the perfect pop of color against the backdrop of green grass and trees. During the ceremony, the officiant, Amanda, directed everyone to look under their seat for a flower they had hidden. Amanda’s own fiance was the one who found it, which was so sweet.
After the ceremony, we all loaded into an old truck and Shelby’s dad drove us to a nearby park for portraits. The vista views were spectacular! We set up the truck and some of the floral arrangements as a little backdrop and took photos in and around the truck, then in front of the gorgeous view. I loved Shelby’s boho wedding dress and sweeping veil with floral detail, so I made sure to get plenty of photos of those.
Back at the homestead, Meghan of Goforth Event Planning was putting finishing touches on the reception. Every detail was meticulously thought out and arranged into perfection for Shelby and Devin’s big day. I loved how they even created their own little bee-themed family crest. There was so much to see - I could’ve photographed their wedding details all day!
The rest of the evening consisted mostly of casual hangs with family and friends. Guests partook in an amazing charcuterie spread while listening to heartfelt toasts and playing yard games. Shelby and Devin cut their cake, then Shelby surprised Devin with a birthday cake (his birthday was the following day)!
All-in-all, this was the sweetest day. It was such an honor to play such an important part in creating these memories for Shelby and Devin!
