Meghan + Andrew's Casual Elopement at Green Lakes State Park

There seems to be this preconceived notion about eloping that it’s not really an elopement unless you keep it a secret from your family and friends. But Meghan and Andrew’s casual elopement surrounded by loved ones proves the point that elopements don’t have to be just the Bride and Groom.

I’ve known Meghan since high school, so I was absolutely thrilled when she reached out last year and asked me to photograph her intimate elopement. She and Andrew dreamed of a small outdoor wedding ceremony in fall, so I helped them choose a date and plan the logistics of their Green Lakes State Park nuptials. They originally planned to keep the guest list small with two New York elopement photographers (Brandon and myself), along with one friend to act as their witness. But as the date drew near, the plans changed. Meghan and Andrew ended up inviting their closest family and friends, and I’m so glad they did!

If you decide to include guests at your outdoor casual elopement, it’s important to choose a location that’s easily accessible for family members who need assistance, those with kids, or really just anyone who isn’t up for hiking in heels. This quaint waterfront spot at Green Lakes State Park was the perfect backdrop for Meghan and Andrew to say “I do” without veering too far from the trailhead.

The clouds broke apart just in time for the ceremony to begin. Meghan and Andrew exchanged vows and rings with gorgeous sunlight shining in on them from across the water. After the kiss, they spent a few minutes basking in the congratulatory embrace of their guests before cutting their wedding cake. Created by Youngman’s Yummies, the cake resembled a slice of birch tree, which was perfectly fitting for their rustic casual elopement.

We joined the happy couple on an easy hike around the park, stopping at various locations around the trail for photographs by the lake and in the woods. The stellar fall leaves really popped against the gloomy evening light. Right as the sun finally dipped below the horizon, the clouds opened up and the rain started coming down. We grabbed a few last photos before parting ways. Meghan and Andrew ended their evening by swinging through Coppertop Tavern to pick up dinner to enjoy with their dogs in the comfort of their own home.

This was such a dreamy and peaceful wedding day from top to bottom. Eloping is always a great choice for low-key couples who want a low-stress and enjoyable day that’s truly centered around you and your partner. Congratulations to Meghan and Andrew!
